In The Spotlight - Lavender

One of the most "essential" of the essential oils is lavender oil. Keeping a bottle of this oil is a must for every home since lavender has so many uses. A few drops of lavender oil wiped on a burn remarkably returns the skin to normal within days. It is known to prevent blistering and scarring. The same few drops of lavender oil can be rubbed on the temples for headache relief. Lavender naturally repels mosquitoes and moths, and has antiseptic and antibiotic qualities that make it effective on cuts, wounds and scrapes. Lavender oil rubbed on the chest aids relaxation and helps induce sleep. Lavender helps reduce stress. Best of all, Lavender has such a beautiful aroma that it can be used simply as a perfume. Much of the lavender on the market smells nice but does not have the chemical properties of pure quality lavender. In order to reap the healing benefits of lavender, make sure you purchase from a source that you trust.

The Story of Modern Aromatherapy
We know from Egyptian hieroglyphics and ancient Chinese manuscripts that essential oils were used thousands of years before the time of Christ. And we know there are numerous references to the oils in the bible. But the term Aromatherapy came from a French chemist, René-Maurice Gattefossé in 1920. One day, as Dr. Gattefossé worked in his lab, he had an accident that caused severe burns on his hand and forearm. Looking to cool the burn, he submerged his arm into a bowl filled with lavender oil, thinking it was water. He found the burning slowly decreased and then stopped altogether. After a period of time, the burn healed without a scar. Dr. Gattefossé became ecstatic about the lavender oil and began analyzing the semi oily resin in other plants, flowers, trees, shrubs, roots, seeds, leaves, bushes and stems. He determined that the aromatic substances had definite healing properties and coined the term Aromatherapy.

Did you know?

  • Today, there are over 250 essential oils being distilled for commercial and therapeutic use.
  • It takes over 60,000 rose blossoms to produce one ounce of rose essential oil. This is why rose is one of the most expensive oils on the market.
  • Therapeutic grade lavender is grown at a high altitude, distilled for one and ½ hours at 240 degrees.
  • In 1922, when King Tutenkhamon's tomb was opened, 350 liters of essential oils were found in alabaster jars. The oils were completely preserved.

Product Popularity
Our sales show that the most popular items of the season have been the "Season" Aroma-Spray and the Breathe Concentrate. We are hearing that people are using the Season spray with success this winter. Tami, a math teacher in a New York City public school, wrote that she has not had a cold since Christmas. Tami says she is amazed since everyone around her has had the usual winter bug. The Breathe concentrate is also getting raves from sinus sufferers. A few drops of Breathe on the nostrils or in the humidifier truly relieve that stuffy feeling from colds. NewBorn Essentials' blends are all available in concentrated formulas. We also sell single oils in 5ml, 10ml and 15ml bottles.

My Story
Many have asked, "How did you get into this business of yours?" Here is my story. As most of you know, I have been a television executive in New York City for the past 10 years. My passion for and experience with essential oils began early in 1996 during a period of insomnia. I could not sleep at all. Stress and anxiety were keeping me from being able to sleep. My friend and spiritual advisor Nancy Schenck suggested I buy lavender and marjoram oils to place in a clay pot by my bed. The hope was that the aromatic oils would help induce sleep. They did, and I slept. Instantly, I became an aromatherapy enthusiast.

I spent the next three years doing extensive research on essential oils and immediately incorporated aromatherapy into my daily life. Quickly I learned that there were no guidelines for the oils on the market. The prices ranged from inexpensive to quite costly - each company claiming that their oils were of "high quality". After working with essential oils from various companies, I discovered there was a standard set in France by the INSA (the scientific institute of Aromatherapy). According to the Institute, all eos should be defined by their botanical species, plant part, place of origin, and biochemical profile. The certification HEBBD (essential oils biochemically and botanically defined) was given only to oils that followed those guidelines. I made a commitment to find these oils.

Having found sources for therapeutic grade oils, I developed synergistic formulas based on my research. At this point my interest was in the therapeutic benefit of essential oils as opposed to just their aesthetic appeal. I saw that the application of essential oils was a way to compliment allopathic medicine, and in some cases, replace conventional pharmaceuticals altogether. Much trial and error time was spent creating formulas to naturally remedy my own headaches, colds, anxiety, sleeplessness and blues.

I wanted people to know about this and I decided to bottle my blends as sprays for the home and body. A body and air spray is a convenient method of essential oil application and a simple introduction to aromatherapy in every day life. In January 1999 Newborn Essentials, Inc. was born. The goal of Newborn Essentials is more than selling aromatherapy products. Our intent is to promote taking responsibility for one's own health. As people become more open to self-healing, aromatherapy will be a great part of the solution. Newborn Essentials' mission is to create a business centered on the principles of giving. Caring for self and others is one of the main ingredients for a fulfilling life.
